The Heritage Society recently spotted and purchased this superb postcard for the archives.
Though it was postally used in 1909, our expert believes it was taken in 1907 or thereabouts because of the tramline configuration.
It was taken on High Street, the photographer setting his tripod up at the top of Hope Street, and pointing it towards Swinton Road and Post Office Square.
Much has changed in over a century - but surprisingly, a lot remains. Glancing above the shop frontages the old sandstone first floors and bay windows are largely unchanged. To the right is Commercial Row - now just a short-cut to the car park where homes on Sarah Street stood.
